The record gets off to a great start with the instantly winning single "You" -- a bit of which is then repeated to open side two. But here, the basic idea and instrumental track come from February 1971, during George's most fertile period, dressed up with vocals and string synthesizer four years later. One of George's most beautifully harmonized, majestic, strangely underrated ballads "The Answer's at the End" -- whose inspiring lyric was based upon an inscription on George's home by its builder, Sir Frank Crisp -- comes next, followed by "This Guitar (Can't Keep from Crying)," an attractive sequel to "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." At this point, the devoted fan's hopes go up; could this be an unsung masterpiece? But George has fired off his best stuff first, and the record slowly and inexorably tails off, closing with a baffling salute to ex-Bonzo Dog Band member "Legs" Larry Smith. Yet despite its stretches of treadmill material, Extra Texture has worn better as a whole than its Apple neighbors Dark Horse and even much of Living in the Material World, for even the lesser tunes reveal a few musical blossoms upon re-listening and the front-loaded songs are among the best of his solo career. © Richard S. Frontman Johannes Eckerström and his band of clown-painted misfits have gained a global following in the last ten years for their modernized take on the nü-metal formula. The novelty clearly hasn't worn off, and album number nine arrives just as Avatar is due for a style change. They've thrown everything but the kitchen sink into this one, mixing sounds from across the metal spectrum including King Diamond, Rammstein, Mushroomhead, and In Flames. It's loud, it's baffling, it's occasionally catchy and it's always unmistakably Avatar. There's a lot more freedom in the songwriting then there's been for a while with these guys. For a group as outlandish as Avatar, the last record came dangerously close to predictable. No such problems here. Opener "This Is Why" serves up disco-diva vocals and liquid-gold Chic-style bass for a tune about paranoia ("This is why I don't leave the house/ You said the coast is clear/ But you won't catch me out") and the encroaching dangers of social media. "If you have an opinion/ maybe you should shove it . might be best to keep it to yourself," sings Williams, who stepped away from Instagram a while back with the intention of "looking up and out, rather than down." The suck of screen time-and how modern-day doom scrolling both brings us together as a community but also causes dissociation-is also the theme of "The News:" "So far from the faultline . I'm safe inside/ But I worry and I give money/ And I feel useless behind this computer," she sings, while the percussion skitters. Deliciously, it would've fit right in on the band's 2007 classic Riot! But they've learned a lot since that album, including how a velvet hammer is just as effective as nonstop thunderous bludgeoning. Songs like "Figure 8" and angular "You First" (featuring the great line "I'm both the killer and the final girl") mix emo hallmarks and more subtle, even lush dynamics. "Running Out of Time"-with its lament of there never being enough time to do everything you want or feel obligated to do-finds Williams trying on silky, Lisa Stansfield-style vocals on the verses and pure agitation elsewhere, against funky guitar and drum splashes. She also gets playfully experimental with "C'est Comme Ca," a punky track that finds the singer trying on an affect that is a little bit goth and a little bit Rockwell a la "Somebody's Watching Me:" "In a single year, I've aged one hundred/ My social life, a chiropractic appointment/ Sit still long enough to listen to yourself/ Or maybe just long enough for you to atrophy to hell." (That said, the singer has admitted that "I'm trying to get un-addicted to a survival narrative.") There's a floaty ballad ("Liar"), tense post-punk guitars contrasted with disco-ball dreaminess ("Big Man, Little Dignity") and a plush Cocteau Twins moment ("Crave"). Comprised of rock veteran players, BLACKWULF features Alex Cunningham on vocals, Pete Holmes on guitar, Jesse Rosales on guitar, Scott Peterson on bass, and Dave Pankenier on drums. Drawing from influences found in the darker corners of your stepdad's vinyl collection, the vintage five-piece outfit's electric live performances and headbanging heaviness have converted a wide base of ravenous fans from Los Angeles to London. What distinguishes BLACKWULF from many of their contemporaries is a strong emphasis on "songs" rather than "sounds", delivering a wide slab of listenable vintage-style heavy metal that draws its strengths from imaginative content and quality performance. Founded in 2012 in the San Francisco Bay Area, the band's first vinyl release, "Mind Traveler", was released on Wickerman Records and met with critical acclaim. 2015 saw BLACKWULF aligning with premier California heavy rock label Ripple Music, and releasing their signature second album, "Oblivion Cycle", a riffed-out metal tour de force, whose "serious stoner vibes" were praised by Decibel Magazine. 2018 found the band digging deeper into vintage metal roots, releasing their second Ripple Music vinyl, "Sinister Sides"; the album featured three guest tracks from a fan (and now friend) of the band, Geof O'Keefe, an original founder of PENTAGRAM. BLACKWULF celebrated the release in the Spring of 2018 by performing as a featured artist at Austin's South By Southwest Festival and then again across the pond at Desertfest in London. Fast forward to 2022: BLACKWULF have roared back from the pandemic hiatus with a new Ripple Music album, "Thieves and Liars", due to be released in February of 2023, recorded and produced in Oakland by Jesse Nichols (IGGY & The STOOGES, TY SEGALL, JAMES WILLIAMSON).
