After his death in 1980, his wife, Yoko Ono, passed the tapes to the remaining Beatles, and in 1995, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and George Harrison began work on a trio of new Beatles songs born from Lennon's sketches. You've heard a couple of them before-"Real Love" and "Free as a Bird"-but one of them never came to fruition during those sessions. "When we started 'Now and Then,' it was very difficult because John was sort of hidden in a way," said Starr in a documentary about how The Beatles' final song came together. "In John's demo tape, the piano was a little hard to hear," said McCartney. They put together some of the song's building blocks, including having Harrison record guitar parts for the song. But they couldn't properly isolate Lennon's vocals from his piano. So "'Now and Then' just kind of languished in a cupboard," McCartney said. Fast-forward to 2022. Using machine-learning technology that director Peter Jackson's team had developed for the 2021 Beatles documentary Get Back, engineers were able to separate Lennon's voice from his original demo of "Now and Then," finally allowing the remaining Beatles to finish the track. "It's like John's there," said Ringo of the now-crystalline vocal track. "It's far out." Paul and producer Giles Martin (son of Beatles producer George Martin) were then able to assemble John's 1970s vocals with George's 1995 guitar lines and Paul and Ringo's new vocal and instrumental parts, as well as a string arrangement, to complete the song. They understand soul music and together they're determined to add something new to its commanding canon. With Burton writing most of the songs and Quesada adding electric guitar chords and building arrangements, the influences are obvious. Names like Donny Hathaway and Al Green can be added to Sam Cooke and Neil Young, who are mentioned in the band's bio. The patron saint here, though, is Prince, who hovers over and inside tunes like "Ice Cream (Pay Phone)" and the funky "Sauvignon" (featuring Burton's urgent, impassioned falsetto). It's that voice that is front and center on Black Puma's secone album, Chronicles of a Diamond, and also seems to be the reason why everything is taken at a uniformly slow-to-midtempo pace with no true ballads and nothing galloping with abandon. As this collection plays, melody and structure give way to jams which give Burton space to stretch, as in the rhythmic piano chord pounding of "Mrs. Postman," where he finds room to testify. Or "More Than a Love Song" where the music fades away leaving just his voice, imparting the message, "Life is more than a love song, more than a fantasy. More than dream, more than a fantasy." A much-needed change of pace comes in "Angel," which opens with just an acoustic guitar before Burton sings with discipline and beauty to finger snaps and delicate keyboard flutters. He uses his falsetto to great effect in the lighthearted "Hello," which features swirling keyboards and background vocals from Lauren Cervantes and Angela Miller. The duo's psychedelic side, which was a big part of their self-titled debut's success, has been de-emphasized, appearing in brief bursts like in the fuzzed-out, phased-out guitar licks of "Tomorrow." "Rock and Roll" is more a steady chant, enhanced by distortion and echo on Burton's voice. The success of the album derives from a combination of an increased sense of songwriting skills and purpose. Not only does Joe Perry turn out indelible riffs like "Walk This Way," "Toys in the Attic," and "Sweet Emotion," but Steven Tyler has fully embraced sleaziness as his artistic muse. Taking his cue from the old dirty blues "Big Ten Inch Record," Tyler writes with a gleeful impishness about sex throughout Toys in the Attic, whether it's the teenage heavy petting of "Walk This Way," the promiscuous "Sweet Emotion," or the double-entendres of "Uncle Salty" and "Adam's Apple." The rest of Aerosmith, led by Perry's dirty, exaggerated riffing, provide an appropriately greasy backing. Before Toys in the Attic, no other hard rock band sounded like this. Sure, Aerosmith cribbed heavily from the records of the Rolling Stones, New York Dolls, and Led Zeppelin, but they didn't have any of the menace of their influences, nor any of their mystique.
