Un giorno, scopre per caso che l'eccentrica nonna con cui vive nella Chinatown di San Francisco è in realtà la custode dell'uovo di fenice e che lui e la sua famiglia fanno parte di una lunga stirpe di protettori magici noti come i Guardiani. Quando sua nonna muore in battaglia e viene portata via su un carro fantasma, Tom diventa l'apprendista di un improbabile mentore - una tigre che si fa chiamare Signor Hu - per imparare l'antica magia e diventare il nuovo protettore dell'uovo. I due collaborano con un'improbabile banda di creature esotiche, ognuna delle quali rappresenta un diverso segno dello zodiaco cinese, che possono trasformarsi in forma umana pur mantenendo le loro innate caratteristiche animali.
