It is the second posthumous Mothers album released after the band disbanded in 1969, preceded by Burnt Weeny Sandwich. In contrast to it's predecessor, which predominately focused on studio recordings of tightly arranged compositions, Weasels Ripped My Flesh largely consists of live recordings and features more improvisation. Whereas all but one of the pieces on Burnt Weeny Sandwich have a more planned feel captured by quality studio equipment, five tracks from Weasels Ripped My Flesh capture the Mothers on stage, where they employ frenetic and chaotic improvisation characteristic of avant-garde jazz and free jazz. To understand those influences, it is worth considering the background of Mustafa Khetty who is the man behind The Morpheus Project. Khetty is sometimes described as a composer because of his ventures in the realm of classical music. Those influences can be heard here, but whereas the 70s prog bands were influenced by well-known classical music from the 17th to 20th centuries, Khetty's classical influences are contemporary with elements of Glass, Richter and Einaudi in his music. Khetty is also well travelled, having been born in Sri Lanka and having lived in the Middle and Far East as well as the UK and Ireland, so the sounds of those regions of the world creep into his music too. By throwing all these musical styles and influences into the mixer, Khetty does risk producing a horrible hotch-potch but he skillfully heads that off by avoiding mixing too many styles within any one track. The word 'unique' is overused in the music industry, what Mustafa Khetty has produced here with The Morpheus Project is 100% unique and well worth listening to. For this EP, Starr collaborated with songwriters and producers including Jeff Zobar who penned the title track, "Zoom In, Zoom Out" during the pandemic, and features Robbie Krieger on guitar; Sam Hollander who wrote and produced "Teach Me To Tango" - sending Ringo a nearly completed track onto which he added vocals and, of course, drums; Ringo co-wrote "Waiting for the Tide to Turn" with his engineer Bruce Sugar, adding Tony Chen and his extensive reggae roots; and "Not Enough Love In the World" which was written by long time All Starr member Steve Lukather and Joseph Williams Taking every precaution, Starr invited only a few musicians at various times to his home studio to record the music.
