The David Tattersall Group are old friends who rehearsed together for months in a small, smoky, sweaty room, before recording the album on a huge red boat moored on the River Thames, all vintage microphones and wooden walls inside. Friendship is a vital part of the record's magic. Stylistic influences include Ronnie Lane, after whom one song is named, and the nylon-string guitar work of Jonathan Richman and Willie Nelson. This reissue comes with brand new artwork that was commissioned and art-directed by Gala and Jamie Wright, Richard's children and managers of his estate. This time, the unidentified person in bright red shorts is swimming within deep blue waters of the sea rather than a pool and the image expands out to reveal a boat slightly out of their reach, referencing the nautical theme of the record. The image was taken by Costas Spathis, a photographer living and working in Greece, which is where the album was written and the graphic design is by Carl Glover. When originally released, post Pink Floyd's ANIMALS (1977) and shortly before THE WALL (1979), WET DREAM was largely under-appreciated. Steven Wilson's mix gives new life to the record demonstrating Wright's brilliance. He wrote and produced the whole album himself and it was one of only three albums released outside of Pink Floyd - BROKEN CHINA, his second solo album from 1996 and IDENTITY, released in 1983 under the guise of Zee, a duet with Dave Harris from Fashion. The blu-ray is presented in a blu-ray-sized book format with soft touch lamination and comes with four collectible postcards and an 8-page concertina booklet. They understand soul music and together they're determined to add something new to its commanding canon. With Burton writing most of the songs and Quesada adding electric guitar chords and building arrangements, the influences are obvious. Names like Donny Hathaway and Al Green can be added to Sam Cooke and Neil Young, who are mentioned in the band's bio. The patron saint here, though, is Prince, who hovers over and inside tunes like "Ice Cream (Pay Phone)" and the funky "Sauvignon" (featuring Burton's urgent, impassioned falsetto). It's that voice that is front and center on Black Puma's secone album, Chronicles of a Diamond, and also seems to be the reason why everything is taken at a uniformly slow-to-midtempo pace with no true ballads and nothing galloping with abandon. As this collection plays, melody and structure give way to jams which give Burton space to stretch, as in the rhythmic piano chord pounding of "Mrs. Postman," where he finds room to testify. Or "More Than a Love Song" where the music fades away leaving just his voice, imparting the message, "Life is more than a love song, more than a fantasy. More than dream, more than a fantasy." A much-needed change of pace comes in "Angel," which opens with just an acoustic guitar before Burton sings with discipline and beauty to finger snaps and delicate keyboard flutters. He uses his falsetto to great effect in the lighthearted "Hello," which features swirling keyboards and background vocals from Lauren Cervantes and Angela Miller. The duo's psychedelic side, which was a big part of their self-titled debut's success, has been de-emphasized, appearing in brief bursts like in the fuzzed-out, phased-out guitar licks of "Tomorrow." "Rock and Roll" is more a steady chant, enhanced by distortion and echo on Burton's voice.
