Il re di Francia Luigi XIV, che ha 28 anni, vuole la nobiltà francese presente all'autorità del potere reale. Per lasciare Parigi e gli eventi della Fronda che ancora lo perseguitano fino ad oggi, ha deciso di spostare il suo governo nell'ex residenza di caccia di suo padre. Per attirare i nobili alla sua corte e tenerli sotto controllo in tal modo, ha lanciato la costruzione della reggia di Versailles. Questa impresa di dimensioni e costi sproporzionati susciterà malcontento e discordia. In un ambiente di corte travolto dalle cospirazioni, come farà Luigi ad imporre il suo potere di vivere, le sue passioni amorose e guadagnare il titolo di Re Sole?
