Yoh Asakura è il discendente di una antichissima famiglia di sciamani. Fin da piccolo è in grado di vedere gli spiriti e, anziché ignorarli o essere spaventato da loro, tende sempre a farci amicizia. Il suo desiderio più grande è di vivere in tranquillità. La storia si apre a Tokyo dove inizia a frequentare la scuola insieme ad un ragazzo di nome Manta, da lui incontrato in un cimitero. Fin da subito troverà in Manta un amico importantissimo, tanto che gli rivelerà la sua abilità di intermediario con gli spiriti. Yoh si trova a Tokyo per partecipare allo Shaman Fight, ossia un torneo tra sciamani che si svolge ogni 500 anni per eleggere lo Shaman King. Chi diventa Shaman King può esaudire il suo più grande desiderio, e con l'assimilazione al grande spirito (conseguente l'incoronazione a re degli sciamani) possederà tutte le conoscenze del passato, presente e futuro.
