In una città dei morti, da tempo in rovina e lontana dalla civiltà umana, vive un solo bambino umano. Il suo nome è Will, e viene allevato da tre non morti: il coraggioso guerriero scheletrico, Blood; la graziosa sacerdotessa mummificata, Maria; e lo stregone spettrale irritabile, Gus. I tre riversano amore nel ragazzo e gli insegnano tutto quello che sanno. Ma un giorno Will inizia a chiedersi: "Chi sono io?" Will deve svelare i misteri di questa lontana terra di morti e portare alla luce il passato segreto dei non morti. Deve imparare l'amore e la misericordia degli dei buoni e il fanatismo e la follia dei cattivi. E quando saprà tutto, il ragazzo farà il suo primo passo sulla strada per diventare un Paladino.
