Toward the end of the praise surrounding their third album, 1991's Seeds of Love, Curt Smith left the band. Roland Orzabal was left to sail the ship alone, and the strong success dwindled years later. However, this dozen-track compilation showcases some of the band's early tracks heavily dominated by pulsating bass drops and heavy synth beats. "Pale Shelter" and "Mad World" from their 1982 debut The Hurting moved toward the soul-defining musical maturation found on 1985's groundbreaking staple Songs From the Big Chair. The Top Ten hits are undoubtedly featured: "Everybody Wants to Rule the World," "Shout," and the more obscure "Mothers Talk." The luscious "Head Over Heels" cuts short of its closing guitar work, a disappointment in the grand scheme of Tears for Fears' synth-dominated sound. Such layered riffs separated the rawness from the fluffy new wave aspect. "Sowing the Seeds of Love" marked the band's own branded progressive rock & roll, but "Woman in Chains," the gospel-tinged cut featuring guest vocals from Oleta Adams, was their most spiritual effort. Essentially, the dozen-track collection is a perfect look at what Tears for Fears did for music during the '80s until the mid-'90s. The release is chocked full of what has made the band so successful for twenty years, exuberant sonic pragmatism. This characteristic is represented by the band's long-established goal to write classic pop songs that make the girls and boys dance. Over five studio albums, they have succeeded and, along the way, garnered platinum albums and numerous awards, including a 2004 Mercury Prize, an Ivor Novello award and a few BRIT awards. Set with the task of giving an overview of their career for Hits to the Head, the band, as described by lead singer Alex Kapranos, stated, ".it was like picking out a setlist for a concert", and what a list. There are twenty tracks with 18 existing tracks and two new songs to sweeten the twenty-track offering. Hits to the Head offers up the biggest songs of their career, chart-toppers like "Darts of Pleasure, Take Me Out, This Fire, Ulysses" and numerous others that remind the listener why Franz Ferdinand is still cranking out songs twenty years after their creation. Much of this can be credited to the distinctive sonics signature the band has always created, melding Indie Rock, Post Punk Revival, Dance Punk, Dance Rock and Art Rock. They artfully create a musical world filled with down at the club antics and challenging romances, all the while accurately describing the excitement of pursuing love and experiences within that situation. The band also includes faves that don't always make it on the top 10 lists, along with the big hits. The Clash Hits Back slightly tweaks the running order of the original set -- "Bankrobber" arrived five songs into the concert but appears eighth here -- but that doesn't matter much, as this swap doesn't alter the impact of the original set. The Clash were plugging Combat Rock so songs from that LP -- the singles "Rock the Casbah," "Should I Stay or Should I Go?" and "Straight to Hell," plus "Ghetto Defendant" and "Know Your Rights," adding up to just under half the album -- sit alongside a heavy chunk of London Calling and early hits, plus a few stabs at Sandinista!.
