Or focus enough to make another masterpiece like 2004's Rubber Factory or 2011's El Camino. That situation may have influenced the title of this collection, but any fears about consistency or the way forward are dispelled by the opening riff rocker, "Wild Child." The vintage Black Keys three chord tromper "Your Team is Looking Good" also rocks convincingly, and they get back to one of their core strengths-Mississippi hill country blues stomp, which they celebrated on their last album, Delta Kream-in "For the Love of Money." In a strange turn, the biggest guest here, ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons isn't asked to do much in the mid-tempo "Good Love," which he co-wrote. Recorded at Auerbach's Easy Eye Sound studio in Nashville over a five-month period in summer and fall of 2021, Dropout Boogie was engineered by M. Allen Parker and Caleb VanBuskirk and mixed by the A-list talents of Tchad Blake and Tom Elmhirst. Percussionist Sam Bacco adds variety to Patrick Carney's drumming. A deceptively capable vocalist, Auerbach takes a very credible stab at writing and singing a ballad in "How Long" which is fleshed out by a harpsichord and backup vocals by Cincinnati's Andy Gabbard (Thee Shams, Buffalo Killers) who also tours as The Black Keys' second guitarist. Auerbach sings incendiary lyrics, "If we make it to your town/ We're gonna burn the damn thing down" in odd, leisurely fashion in the decidedly non-menacing, "Burn the Damn Thing Down." And near its end, "Baby I'm Coming Home" breaks into the signature riff from the Allman Brothers, "Midnight Rider." As the album's second half winds down, so does the strength of the tunes, but you'll still find the same fuzzy guitars, big beats and layered vocals that have made their sound special. Musically, the driving principle behind Black Eye was to craft a melodic metal album with big choruses, powerful rhythms, and huge solos that would support the powerful voice of Readman, a world class singer. The band's name is a reference to the Black Eye Galaxy (also known as the Devil's Eye Galaxy), a spiral galaxy with a pinwheel shape that is visible in the constellation of Coma Berenices and is well known among amateur astronomers as it is clearly visible even with small telescopes. The concept for Black Eye came together when Serafino Perugino, President and Head of A&R for Frontiers Records, came up with the idea to pair Readman and producer/guitarist/songwriter Aldo Lonobile together to craft a melodic metal album built upon the foundation of Readman's powerful voice. Produced by Lonobile (Secret Sphere, Archon Angel, Sweet Oblivion), who also plays guitar on the album, Black Eye is comprised of guitarist Luca Princiotta (DORO), who also participated in the songwriting, drummer David Folchitto (ex- Fleshgod Apocalypse, Stormlord), and bassist Andrea Arcangeli (DGM). Additionally, Antonio Agate (arranger for many artists, including Secret Sphere, Timo Tolkki's Avalon, Sweet Oblivion ft. Geoff Tate, and more) and Mattia Gosetti (Agarthic) provide keyboards and orchestra arrangements. Readman has enjoyed a long-running career due to his impressive vocal talents. An English singer best known for being the vocalist of hard rock band Pink Cream 69, who worked with Frontiers over the years on multiple releases, and former vocalist of progressive metal band Adagio. Additionally, Readman released a solo album in 2007 and was also part of German guitarist Alex Beyrodt's band Voodoo Circle, from 2008 to 2016, returning in 2020. In 2015, two projects featuring Readman on lead vocals were revealed. The first, Room Experience, was a melodic rock project led by Italian musician Gianluca Firmo and they released a self-titled album released in May 2015. The second, Almanac, was a new heavy metal band led by former Rage guitarist Victor Smolski. In September 2016, Readman reformed the David Readman Band, his solo band that he had founded in Germany some years back. Never one to rest on his laurels, in 2017, it was announced that Readman had joined New Wave of British Heavy Metal legends Tank. In October 2017, another new project came out called Pendulum of Fortune, featuring Readman with Bodo Schopf, Franky R., and Vladimir Shevjakov. Bassist/Composer/Main Songwriter/Producer and all-around band leader Alex Frey has crafted an incredible follow-up that will please all who have followed the band thus far and is sure to recruit new followers. Production-wise, the songs are driven equally by both the guitars of Radivoj Petrovic and keyboardist Denis Kunz. Both of them are all over this album, drenching the songs with melodic melodies. Something else that makes the album stand out are the terrific background vocals, which includes the exceptional Michael Bormann and new(ish) TNT lead singer Baol Bardot Bulsara. Schenker vocalist Robin McAuley was carried capably by Dokken bassist Jeff Pilson, along with fellow Dokken alum Reb Beach, also infamous for Winger, Whitesnake, Night Ranger and almost countless other credits. Massive drumming was handled by Frehley and Mr. Big powerhouse drummer Matt Starr, and still is. The debut album did a number of new things, in some familiar flavors, to the end that it scored very well with the Sonic Perspectives team. The same band remains intact, and has delivered a new album for 2022. "Generation Mind" promises to be a more focused and polished offering than the band's original debut, but let's find out how it measures up. This one-hour collection of twelve tracks is meant to be one of the biggest arrivals for 2022 from Frontiers Records, as it should be with this talented lineup. The album scores some bonus points for creativity with a one-minute instrumental introduction, which may be called "Before The Light," but seems to reach back a little bit to the Zeppelin catalog and "In The Light," albeit a darker more ominous interpretation of the same feelings. Of course, when Reb starts weaving in some leads halfway in, his signature tremolo work almost gets some Jason Becker vibes happening, which is cool. When the second track, the first "real" track starts, entitled "She Hides Behind," it has Reb's fingerprints all over it. As with the previous Black Swan release, as well as other Reb projects like "The Mob" (with Dug Pinnick), Reb tends to employ riffs and song structures which are great rockers in their own right, but perhaps not adequately the right proggy flavor for the underrated composer known as C.F. Kip Winger. For pushing seventy years of age, Robin McAuley certainly has zero reservations about pushing his vocal cords to the limits, and his voice remains solid and more than up to the task. Shining Black is a melodic metal band featuring vocalist Mark Boals (Yngwie Malmsteen, Ring Of Fire, Royal Hunt) and guitarist Olaf Thorsen (Labyrinth, Vision Divine). Their self-titled debut (2020) showcased cutting edge melodic metal songwriting techniques from Thorsen combined with the outstanding vocal abilities of Boals. Thorsen and Boals now present "Postcards From the End of the World", their sophomore album, which again highlights the outstanding collaboration between the two musicians. This album takes up where the debut left off, comprising ten songs of modern power metal with the combination of Boals' lung-busting vocals and Thorsen's blistering guitar skills. Completing the lineup are Oleg Smirnoff on keyboards & piano, Nik Mazzucconi on bass, and Matt Peruzzi on drums. The roots of Thorsen and Boal's artistic collaboration goes back to 2014, when the Italian power/progressive metal band Labyrinth was faced with the dilemma of moving forward without their long-time singer Roberto Tiranti. The band invited Boals to join them and began work on new songs which would have been released on the band's next album. However, Mark's busy schedule at the time did not fit in with the recording plans Labyrinth had at the time and ultimately their work together stalled. (Tiranti would eventually rejoin Labyrinth and release a new record, "Architecture of a God".) Despite not getting to work together in Labyrinth, Mark and Olaf remained in touch and when the occasion arose, by suggestion from Frontiers, the two artists took the opportunity to work together and thus the Shining Black project was born. Shining Black's second album will once again delight power metal fans with its accomplished musicianship and empowering vocals.
