Ha così modo di ripercorrere con la memoria episodi della propria infanzia e della propria adolescenza, alcuni realmente accaduti altri soltanto immaginati: le estati nella casa di campagna, quando il padre aveva ormai abbandonato la sua famiglia e la madre sperava invano in un suo ritorno; l'incendio del fienile; il lavoro della madre nella tipografia; la guerra; la scoperta dell'arte di Leonardo da Vinci e del primo amore, quello verso una ragazzina dai capelli rossi; le esercitazioni al poligono di tiro; le liti con la sorellina; il momentaneo ritorno del padre; la visita della madre ad una ricca signora per scambiare alcuni gioielli con un po' di cibo. Gli episodi, alcuni dei quali ospitano poesie di Arsenij Tarkovskij, il padre del regista, sono frammezzati da due colloqui di Aleksej con Natalja, l'ex moglie da cui l'uomo ha avuto il figlio Ignat, e da alcuni brevi filmati di repertorio. Vediamo così immagini della seconda guerra mondiale (festeggiamenti e distruzioni), l'eroismo dei soldati russi, il fanatismo dei seguaci di Mao.
