Il ragazzo viene incaricato di proteggere Kaname Chidori, una normalissima (e bellissima) studentessa liceale giapponese, che in realtà nasconde inconsapevolmente un grande segreto. Kaname infatti è una Whispered, e nel suo cervello è custodito il segreto della Black Technology, una tecnologia talmente sofisticata da rendere obsolete perfino le armi nucleari. Sousuke quindi deve proteggere la ragazza, iscrivendosi nella sua stessa scuola e finendo per combinare disastri su disastri (si veda Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu) essendo infatti abituato al solo mondo militare, il ragazzo si dimostra incapace di comprendere il mondo dei civili, scambiando gesti comuni per tutti gli altri per improbabili minacce e arrivando a portare a scuola ogni genere di arma.
