La Gestapo sta per catturare in Svizzera lo scienziato Franz Tobel, inventore di un puntatore ad alta precisione da installare sui bombardieri, che potrebbe segnare una svolta decisiva nella guerra aerea. Sherlock Holmes lo salva avventurosamente e lo porta con sé a Londra, ma Tobel, temendo che il congegno possa essere trafugato, preferisce affidarne la produzione a quattro scienziati di sua fiducia, il nome dei quali, sconosciuto alle stesse autorità, è affidato ad un ingegnoso codice crittografato. Ciascuno degli scienziati lavora su una determinata sezione del progetto ignorando l'attività degli altri, e quando Tobel viene rapito dal professor Moriarty che intende vendere l'invenzione al Terzo Reich, Holmes lotta contro il tempo per decifrare il codice e sottrarre le quattro sezioni del progetto dalle mani del nemico. Il film riprende l'idea del codice cifrato dal racconto.
