Mike Vargas, ispettore della polizia messicana e sua moglie Susan, devono interrompere il loro viaggio di nozze per venire a capo dell'uccisione del ricco proprietario Linnekar, avvenuta al confine tra gli Stati Uniti e il Messico. Il film è basato sull'autobiografia del 1853 di Solomon Northup, un uomo di colore libero che è stato costretto alla schiavitù. L'uomo, istruito, sposato e cittadino di New York, venne attirato a Washington con una offerta di lavoro, per poi essere rapito e ridotto in schiavitù per anni sotto vari padroni. Tornò libero quando un carpentiere canadese e anti-schiavista riuscì a ottenere, assieme alla moglie di Northup, la sua liberazione.

Charlot, operaio in un grande complesso industriale, estenuato dal ritmo frenetico di lavoro, perde la ragione. Ricoverato in una casa di cura, viene dimesso qualche tempo dopo per finire però quasi subito in prigione, a causa di una manifestazione di operai nella quale si ritrova casualmente coinvolto. Durante la detenzione, egli concorre, inconsapevole, a sventare una rivolta di detenuti; ciò gli frutta l' immediata scarcerzione. Una volta libero, riprende la sua dura lotta per sopravvivere: gli è di conforto l' amicizia di una giovane orfana, con cui divide fraternamente la propria casetta e quel po' di cibo che riesce a procurarsi. Quando la ragazza trova lavoro in un cabaret e riesce a far assumere anche Charlot, ai due derelitti sembra schiudersi la prospettiva di un futuro migliore. Alex è un giovane senza arte né parte, figlio di proletari e dedito a furti, stupri e omicidi. Fa capo a una banda di spostati, denominati drughi. Dopo aver usato violenza alla moglie di uno scrittore finisce in carcere. Viene sottoposto ad angherie ma si fa amico un prete. Pur di essere scarcerato accetta il "trattamento lodovico", che consiste nell'assistere a filmati di violenza. Quando esce scopre che i genitori hanno subaffittato la sua stanza. Senza poter reagire, dovrà subire violenza da alcuni mendicanti vendicativi, dai drughi diventati poliziotti e dallo scrittore che ha perso la moglie e che ora si trova su una sedia a rotelle. Tenta il suicidio e all'ospedale riceve una visita di cortesia da parte del primo ministro.
