C'è però una cosa che lo tormenta: nonostante la sua personalità gentile, ha ereditato da suo padre uno sguardo intimidatorio, che spesso porta i suoi compagni di classe a fraintenderlo. Ma tutto questo sta per cambiare. Il primo giorno di scuola, accidentalmente, Ryuuji si scontra con la creatura più pericolosa della scuola - Taiga Aisaka, conosciuta anche come Tigre Tascabile. Nonostante il suo aspetto minuto, Taiga ha un carattere davvero difficile e si è lasciata alle spalle una "scia di sangue" ovunque sia passata. Dopo il suo sfortunato incontro con Taiga, Ryuuji fa del suo meglio per evitarla. Però, per caso, scopre che Taiga è innamorata del suo migliore amico, Yuusaku Kitamura, mentre Taiga scopre della cotta di Ryuuji per la sua migliore amica, Minori Kushieda. E così Taiga decide.
